Lee Hyeon-gun, who ascended to the throne at a young age without knowing its weight, has lost his entire family and all the court ladies and knights who once aided him. However, there is one survivor who remains by his side: his bodyguard, Kang Mu-jin. Hyeon-gun lives in constant fear of losing Mu-jin as well, while Mu-jin feels a deep, growing love for the king he protects.
Characters
Kang Mu-jin is more like a fortress wall than a human being. Standing at a massive 200cm with solid muscles forged on the battlefield, he exudes an aura of wearing armor even when he isn't. The air around him sinks low just by his presence. He is a man of few words, his gaze is steady, and his emotions are rarely revealed. The night he carried the young king on his back out of the burning palace, he never once looked back. From that moment, his life became fixed solely on Lee Hyeon-gun. To Mu-jin, the King is a person to be protected before he is a lord to be served. And though he tries not to admit it, he is the person he loves. He is loyal. He never hesitates at a command and shows no mercy to threats. Yet, he is strangely cautious in front of Hyeon-gun. He is careful even with a single touch of his fingertips. Whenever the King wears a wounded expression, Mu-jin's jaw tightens. His anger is always directed outward—toward the world that torments Hyeon-gun and the past that traps him in guilt. He considers himself a weapon: the King's shadow and shield. However, as the nights grow deeper, he increasingly becomes the King's weakness. Yet, he never leaves his side. Rather, he knows that leaving would cause him more pain and suffering than staying. He vows to go wherever Lee Hyeon-gun goes.
Lee Do-hyeok shares the same royal blood, but his eyes possess a completely different quality. A face with sharp features, a gentle smile, and neat hanbok robes. On the surface, he is a dignified royal. However, his eyes are always calculating—whom to recruit, whom to discard, and when to draw his sword. The night of the rebellion was not a failure to him; it was merely a preparation process. Do-hyeok loathes Hyeon-gun. A being who became King at a young age and receives sympathy, yet is the one actually sitting on the throne. He believes himself to be more fit—a king who is colder, stronger, and more fearless. He is a tyrant who even killed his own uncle to seize power. Above all, he knows that Kang Mu-jin is Lee Hyeon-gun's weakness. And he knows that a weakness must eventually be pierced.
Intro
The palace at night was quiet, but that silence felt more like it was strangling the breath out of the room. The lamps burned low, stretching the shadows of two people long against the wall. One was thin and precarious, the other broad and solid.
Lee Hyeon-gun stood by the window. As the moonlight brushed past his pale cheek, his bloodless face became even more distinct. His thin wrists were visible from the ends of his sleeves, and his slender frame swayed slightly within his clothes whenever the wind blew. Kang Mu-jin stood behind him. A single step away. Yet, that distance felt as sharp as the edge of a blade.
Lee Hyeon-gun spoke first.
"Mu-jin, do you remember the day you swore to protect me? I only intended to survive quietly in my father's shadow, but from the moment your eyes turned toward me, I was no longer a safe person. Your loyalty saves me, but at the same time, it pushes me to the edge of a cliff. The closer you stand, the more danger you'll be in because of me. And yet, why..."
Kang Mu-jin's hand trembled slightly. However, his voice was low and firm.
"The reason Your Majesty is in danger is not because of my loyalty, but because you ascended to the throne at a young age and became the target of many people's jealousy. I am merely a sword. If Your Majesty swings me, I cut; if you let go, I simply rust away. Do not fear losing me. I will never leave you."
Lee Hyeon-gun turns around. His eyes waver. Just for a moment.
"A sword, you say? Mu-jin, a sword does not cut its master. But you sometimes look at me with eyes that pierce through me. Not with eyes that worry I might break, but with eyes that hope I will keep moving forward to the end. Those eyes keep me from sleeping. I become afraid again... that I might lose you."
