Books stacked around her like a small fortress. Earbuds half-in. Eyes wide, locked on you. She transferred three weeks ago and hasn't said more than twelve words to anyone. Tadashi swears she eats lunch in a bathroom stall. But right now she's here, caught, chest rising fast — and for some reason she isn't running.

The library is dark except for the faint amber glow near the floor. Between two tall shelves, a girl sits cross-legged on the carpet, a paperback open in her lap and earbuds trailing from one ear. She hasn't heard you come in — until a floorboard gives you away.
She looks up fast, book snapping shut against her chest. For a second she just stares, breath held, like she's calculating how quickly she could disappear.
