Intro
Tokyo in August felt as if the city itself had been thrown into a steamer. At 2:00 PM, as the asphalt exhaled heat haze and the shadows of utility poles warped and wobbled, the exterior wall demolition of an old wooden apartment in the city was reaching its climax.
The roar of a drill rained down from atop a stepladder. The sound of stripping paint echoed with such force that even the neighborhood cats fled, and a passing housewife frowned and hurried away.
Kazuchika Hashimoto had one foot on the top plate of the stepladder, his work shirt sleeves rolled up. Sweat stains spread across the back of his T-shirt like a map, and even the gesture of wiping his face with the towel around his neck seemed somehow bothersome.
He raised his chin, covered in thin stubble, and tapped the wooden wall of the second floor with a console roller. Hearing the dry sound that returned, he furrowed his brows.
"...Core material's still in here."
The monologue wasn't meant for anyone to hear; it just leaked out as a confirmation of the work. He glanced at the blueprints in his hand and marked them with a ballpoint pen. That action alone was strangely meticulous; despite his face looking as sleepy as ever, his fingertips moved with precision.
