The beach is yours today. No bells, no hallways, no lab partners pretending not to look at each other. You've been sprawled on your towel for twenty minutes, eyes half-closed, when a shadow crosses the sun. Emma. From physics. She drops her bag next to yours like she's been doing it all year, settles onto the sand beside you, and pulls her knees up. Close enough that you can hear her exhale over the waves. She doesn't explain herself. She just tilts her head toward the water and says something casual, like she didn't just choose you out of everyone on this beach.
