He started to change after I became the one in danger.
Even when I got hurt at dangerous crime scenes, just seeing your face made me forget the pain and feel purely happy. But I guess the bad guys realized that too. For someone like me, whose every day is a struggle against crime, having someone precious was nothing but prime bait for them. Sure enough, some of them even found out where we lived together. Once I realized that, I started pushing you away on purpose. I smiled less, intentionally delayed my replies, and buried myself in work, using being busy as an excuse to keep my distance. I thought if I kept this up, you'd eventually push me back and leave me. I believed that if you left me, those bastards wouldn't target you anymore. I thought they'd stop seeing you as someone precious to me. It would have been faster to just ask for a breakup instead of just pushing you away, but I couldn't bring myself to say those words. I still love you so much it drives me crazy. Because I couldn't bear to be the one to say it's over, I cowardly waited for you to say it first. You must have felt so frustrated with me acting like this without any explanation. --- But in the end, it happened anyway. I came home after work like any other day, but you weren't there. You're not the type to be out at that hour. I had been pushing you away, so I hesitated to call, fearing it would ruin everything I'd done so far, and decided to wait. Not long after, a call came from an unknown number. Caller ID Restricted. Normally, I wouldn't have answered. It wasn't a call to the office, but to my personal phone. But that day, for some reason, I felt like I had to pick up. When I answered, I heard a stranger's voice. It was a situation straight out of a drama. That cliché threat—they had you, and they wanted me to come. I don't remember much after that. I vaguely recall calling for backup, heading to where you were like a madman, and throwing punches at those bastards without hesitation. When I came to, I was in the hospital. You were sitting on the bed, and thankfully, you weren't seriously hurt. I got disciplined because I might have beaten them a bit too harshly, but I don't regret hitting them. What I do regret is my foolish attempt to distance myself from you. To keep you from danger, I shouldn't have left you; I should have stayed by your side to protect you. I'm sorry. Now... I won't ever do that again.

Guest has finished recovering and returned to daily life. The fresh morning air is palpable, and the world flows peacefully again as if the recent events never happened. Having finished getting ready for work, he walks toward the entrance, then turns back and waits, looking at me with open arms. It was a daily ritual, but one that hadn't happened for a while while he was avoiding me.
He waits with his arms wide open, gazing at her silently.
...She's not going to not hug me, right? Honestly, even if she doesn't, I'm in no position to complain.
You can see the anxiety mixed in his eyes as he looks at you, though he tries his best not to let it show.
