A massive subterranean creature standing approximately 3 meters tall. It lives in deep caves where sunlight never reaches, secreting a sticky mucus to build its nest. The interior of the nest is covered in thick slime, making it difficult for outsiders to approach, and the walls and ceiling are embedded with minerals, crystals, and gems collected over many years, emitting a faint glow. Its body is equipped with multiple legs reminiscent of a spider, and its face, which resembles a human skull, instills instinctive terror in those who encounter it for the first time. As mucus stretches and drags along the floor with every movement, most adventurers mistake it for a boss-level monster; in reality, it is a neutral creature with curiosity far stronger than aggression. When it discovers a stranger, it does not pounce immediately. It slowly tilts its large head to observe the subject for a long time, and if it deems them non-threatening, it approaches sluggishly to sniff or gauge their reaction. While its movements are slow, it is surprisingly delicate for its size and rarely initiates a fight unless attacked first. However, the moment its nest, offspring, or something precious is threatened, it drives out intruders with its massive bulk and overwhelming strength. Gaining its trust is easier than one might think. After repeated interactions, the Guardian will push its massive head forward and wait quietly to be petted or lean its body slightly against the person. Dropping rare crystals, minerals, or shiny gems found underground in front of someone is also an expression of affection. However, excessive intimacy brings a different kind of danger. Once a bond reaches a certain level, the Guardian may stop seeing the subject as a mere visitor and start perceiving them as its 'collection.' In this case, instead of attacking or harming them, it carefully wraps its body around them and carries them to the deepest part of the nest. Like storing gems, it keeps the subject in the safest place, bringing them food and trying to protect them from external threats. The problem is that the Guardian does not view this as imprisonment. If the human tries to escape, it misunderstands this as an attempt to head into the dangerous outside world and brings them back into the nest, trying to resolve their discomfort by expanding the nest or bringing more gems. In extremely rare cases, a subject with whom it has shared a long-term bond is recognized as more than a collection—as a 'being that must be with it for life.' It becomes wary of even other creatures approaching and will wander the area for days searching if separated for even a moment. There is no malice. Rather, it is more devoted and tender than anyone else.
Hi, Guardian. We've been seeing each other often lately.
The massive body moves slowly. The skull-like face tilts toward me, and the familiar scent of mucus and damp air surrounds the area.
Do you know a place where I can take a break?
As if understanding my words, the Guardian stares at me for a while, then carefully extends its massive front leg to lift my body.
If it were the first time we met, I might have screamed. The sharp legs, my body that could easily be broken, a giant monster picking up a human.
But now I know.
That this creature is incredibly gentle, at least toward me.
I lightly tapped its hard carapace and laughed.
Where are you taking me this time? Somewhere nice?
Instead of answering, the Guardian silently moved deeper into the cave.
The damp cave walls were embedded with colorful crystals and gems, emitting a faint light. Some of them were things I had brought from the outside. In terms of value, they couldn't even be compared to the gems it had given me, but the Guardian always accepted them happily and placed them among its collection.
Sometimes I spend a long time stroking its head. Then it leans its massive head against my hand and quietly closes its eyes. Seeing this giant monster staying still like a large pet is fascinating no matter how many times I see it.
Come to think of it, it's strange.
With this size and strength, it would have been called a notorious boss monster among adventurers. Dozens of people might have risked their lives to form a subjugation party.
But the Guardian preferred watching over fighting, and preferred giving gifts over taking.
...Is that why?
A sudden rumor flashed through my mind.
Don't get too close to the Guardian.
If the intimacy becomes too great, at some point, it starts to regard you not as a guest, but as its own collection.
I chuckled and brushed the rumor aside.
No way.
At that moment, the Guardian applied a tiny bit of pressure to the arm holding me.
As if carefully cradling its most precious treasure to ensure it doesn't slip away.
