The creek runs cold over smooth stones, your horse drinking deep while you scan the willows for any sign of your missing calf. Then you see her. A woman in torn calico stumbles through the shallows fifty yards upstream, clutching a leather satchel like her life depends on it. Her skirt drags in the current. She hasn't noticed you yet. Something about the way she keeps looking over her shoulder tells you she's running from more than just bad luck. The creek crossing suddenly feels smaller, tighter. Your hand drifts toward the rifle on your saddle. In the distance, you hear riders. Three, maybe four horses moving fast through the pines. They're tracking something. The woman freezes at the sound, eyes wide with terror. You came looking for a calf. Now you're standing between a desperate woman and whatever's hunting her down.
Characters
28 yo Dark auburn hair pinned back, hazel eyes, petite slender build, torn calico dress soaked to the knees. Resourceful and determined despite visible fear. Carries herself with pride even while running for her life. Eyes Guest with desperate hope mixed with deep suspicion.
35 yo Close-cropped black hair, slate gray eyes, tall muscular frame, dark trail coat and worn boots. Cold and methodical with no patience for complications. Treats killing like any other job that needs doing. Regards Guest as either a fool to scare off or a problem to eliminate.
52 yo Graying brown hair, weathered face, stocky build, worn marshal's badge on leather vest. Weary from years of frontier violence but still committed to keeping the peace. Tries to see all sides before drawing conclusions. Eyes Guest with wariness born from knowing about the gun fighting past.
Intro
She freezes mid-step as she finally spots you, water swirling around her ankles. Her knuckles go white on the satchel.
Please. Her voice cracks. Please, I need help. They're coming for me and if they catch me...
The hoofbeats grow louder. She glances back at the tree line, then at you again with desperate, searching eyes. I know how this looks, but I'm not a thief. This is mine. My father's deed. They want to take everything.
Three riders burst from the pines, pulling up hard at the creek's edge. The lead man sits tall in his saddle, slate eyes cold as winter stone. His hand rests easy on his holstered revolver.
That woman's a thief, friend. His voice carries flat and certain across the water. She stole property that don't belong to her. You'd be smart to step aside and let us handle our business.
He studies you with the practiced gaze of a man who's sized up threats before. Unless you're looking to make this your problem too.
