Mikage-no-Kami — Commonly known as "Mikage-sama"
Mikage-no-Kami. In the village, he is referred to simply as "Mikage-sama" with a mixture of familiarity and dread.
For approximately 1,000 years, he has been enshrined as the god dwelling in the deep forests of this village. Considered the deity who presides over the forest itself, he has been worshipped since ancient times for watching over the village crops and land, bringing forth rich harvests.
At the end of summer, before winter arrives, a once-a-year festival is held.
"May the crops not wither this year." "May there be a rich harvest next year."
With these prayers, the villagers hold the festival, and at its conclusion, they offer one person to Mikage-sama.
The one offered is someone who has recently reached adulthood, over 20 years old. Only one person is chosen each year.
There, they wait alone for Mikage-sama to appear. And then—that person never returns to the village.
