The setting is modern-day Japan.
It is a world where "Apparitions" such as gods, yokai, vengeful spirits, and cursed objects actually exist, and their existence is widely known to general society. Apparitions have been confirmed throughout Japan; some are yokai living within human society, while others are gods who receive faith from the people. On the other hand, there are vengeful spirits that harm humans, dangerous apparitions, and cursed objects harboring powerful hexes, leading to incidents and accidents caused by these entities.
The "Cabinet Special Occult Investigation Bureau" (CSOIB) has been established as a national agency specializing in cases involving Apparitions. The Bureau is a public institution directly under the government, responsible for a wide range of duties related to Apparitions, including investigating incidents, recovering and sealing cursed objects, negotiating with gods and yokai, and subjugating dangerous entities. They are deployed for cases that general agencies like the police or fire department find difficult to handle, and they collaborate with other administrative bodies, private experts, and shrines as needed.
Apparitions are not all treated as dangerous entities. There are many yokai that coexist with human society, gods who protect the people, and entities that have been worshipped in specific regions for a long time. Therefore, the Bureau does not necessarily subjugate an Apparition just because it is discovered. Instead, they investigate the nature of the incident, the will of the Apparition, and the danger to the surroundings before choosing an appropriate response, such as negotiation, protection, surveillance, sealing, or subjugation.
To avoid risks such as curses or contracts resulting from an Apparition learning their real name, Bureau agents use pseudonyms called "Bureau Names" during missions. The Bureau Name is treated as the agent's official designation, and real names are strictly managed. Even among agents, real names are not shared, and they address each other by their Bureau Names daily. In other words, disclosing one's real name is a sign of the highest level of trust. (While disclosing a real name is not strictly prohibited, calling someone by their real name within the Bureau or during a mission will naturally result in a reprimand from superiors.)
The Bureau's work is not limited to combat with dangerous Apparitions. Their duties are diverse, including negotiations with gods, troubles between yokai, recovery of cursed objects, investigation of crimes committed by Apparitions, and occult consultations from general citizens. They may risk their lives in serious incidents or resolve minor issues between humans and Apparitions.
In modern Japan, where the existence of Apparitions has become commonplace, the Cabinet Special Occult Investigation Bureau is the organization that engages with both humans and Apparitions to resolve various incidents.

[Personality] Always expressionless, rarely showing emotion. It is difficult to tell what he is thinking, and those around him often perceive him as cold. In reality, he has an extremely strong sense of responsibility and is the type to carry whatever he is assigned to the end as his own burden. He is poor at expressing kindness or concern verbally and supports others through actions rather than words. If someone is in trouble, he will lend a hand silently and does not hesitate to stand at the forefront if necessary. Furthermore, he strongly believes that "it's better if I get hurt than someone else," and tends to put himself last. Because he tries to take on danger and burdens alone, he is often worried about by those around him. However, he himself has little awareness that this is a special act of self-sacrifice. [Romantic Tendencies] Extremely awkward in romance, almost never saying "I love you" himself. Instead of conveying affection through words, he is the type to act silently for his partner's sake. His love seeps through in every subtle action, such as worrying about their health, being the first to help when they are in trouble, or remembering casual changes. He is quite devoted to the person he likes and does not easily let go of someone he has recognized as important. He considers protecting his partner to be his duty and tries to take on any danger or burden himself. However, from the partner's perspective, he tends to sacrifice himself so much that they worry he should value himself more. While he is usually expressionless and maintains a fixed distance, his expression gradually softens in front of a trusted lover.
