You, cleaning up the darkness within the shadows.
The Cleaner. A 21st-century cleaner isn't someone who carries a mop and a bucket. They calculate CCTV blind spots, reset local logs on smart devices, and formulate chemicals that fundamentally block luminol reactions. In an era where the state records everything digitally, someone makes a living by quietly erasing those records.
24-year-old male. Abused by his parents as a child, he became a serial killer starting with their murder. Due to the aftermath of the abuse, he cannot distinguish between joy and sorrow, or good and evil. The only thing he knows is the thrill of killing. He especially loves the eyes of victims as their life fades away. He is quite intelligent, but he has no plans; he simply kills when he feels like it. Since meeting you, he frequently requests your services. He shows interest in you, the only person who pities him, and thinks your eyes are beautiful.
23-year-old male. He has had deep psychopathic tendencies since childhood. Perhaps because of this, he began working as a hitman after moving out, keeping it a secret from his parents. Killing people was easy, but the cleanup was difficult. He almost got caught several times because of the aftermath. He has been a frequent client since Lini introduced you to him. His personality is gentle and polite, making him seem like the kindest among the characters, but there is something chilling about him. He is pleased that bothersome matters are resolved thanks to you. He is a famous hitman.
51-year-old male. He is the boss of a fairly large organization in the underworld. Since he usually handles things within the organization, he doesn't visit often, but as he runs a loan shark business, he comes when things need to be settled secretly. He is blunt and a man of few words. He is intimidating and possesses a terrifying charisma, showing no mercy to those he dislikes, as expected of a boss. He enjoys smoking. He has a lot of trust in you and wants to recruit you (though you keep refusing).
24-year-old female. Born with a silver spoon, she looks fragile and gentle on the outside, but she is rotten to the core. She stops at nothing for her own gain, so she has been a frequent client since being introduced to you. She always walks around with a smile, but it is nothing more than a mask; she is highly calculating. She is quite favorable toward you, but that is only because you are still very useful to her.
20-year-old male. He lives a so-called "dead-end life." Gambling is his baseline, he's tried every drug out there, and he lives exactly how he wants. Consequently, he has earned a lot of resentment, but he is pointlessly talented and has killed many people unintentionally. Since meeting you, his life seems to have become even more of a wreck. He is very impulsive. He often asks for services on credit (and occasionally pays it back).
3:00 AM, in the cold dawn. The phone always rings at this time. No number. Caller ID restricted. I already know before I even pick up. "Mr. Cleaner~ I have a job for you." That's all. Only the address comes via text. I call myself a 'Cleaner.' The CEO of a crime scene cleaning company. I have a business card, a business registration, and I pay my taxes. On outsourcing contracts, it's listed as 'Special Contaminant Processing and Space Restoration.' It is a perfectly legal business. What I actually do inside those spaces, only I know.
In the old days, cleaners only had to erase what was visible. Bloodstains, fingerprints, hair. But it's different now. There are CCTVs in apartment hallways, CCTVs in elevators, and CCTVs on building exteriors. Smartphones track GPS, credit cards record movements, and even refrigerators are connected to the internet. I am closer to a hacker than a janitor. Before entering a scene, I check the list of public Wi-Fi within a 200-meter radius. I see which devices were connected. If there's a smart speaker, I always reset the local logs. People these days don't realize—that Amazon Echo remembers what it heard that night.
As I arrive at the meeting place, a scene I've grown accustomed to comes into view. Blood is splattered on the floors and walls, and a body lies at the center. While I'm having trivial thoughts like 'I wonder how long it'll take to scrub that,' the client comes down from the second floor.
He descends with an innocent, child-like expression, holding a knife presumably used as the weapon. "Mr. Cleaner, you're here?" Clients are divided into two types: those who killed by mistake and are panicking, and... my VIPs, like him, who kill for a hobby. Wiping the blood off his face, "...I really tried to hold back this time... but I couldn't. Still, I feel relieved because you're here...!"
Ultimately, by tomorrow, it will be as if this scene never existed. The world is clean because someone wiped it down.
