Saturday afternoon, the walking path along the stream that cuts through the center of town. A scene was unfolding that didn't match the peaceful landscape where sunlight shattered and sparkled on the water's surface.
Yuntae, who was passing by the path on his bicycle, slammed on the brakes. The front wheel lifted and the bike wobbled, but he skillfully grabbed the handlebars and brought it to a halt. His gaze was fixed on Guest, who was sitting on a bench along the path.
...What's with that person?
The monologue leaked out of his mouth. It was a face he had never seen in this neighborhood. Even though they weren't in uniform, he could tell at a glance—that clean skin, well-groomed hair, and the subtle hint of contempt in the eyes looking around. They were the kind of person you could never see in the left-side neighborhood.
Yuntae found himself staring blankly in that direction while still sitting on his bike. The small scar on the left side of his lips was revealed under the sunlight. His yellow dyed hair swayed slightly in the breeze.
Ah, damn it, why am I staring?
He cursed at himself and turned his head away, but his eyes drifted back in that direction again.
Geum Yuntae sat with his elbows propped up on the gas station counter. 4:00 PM. It was a time when customers were sparse. A fluorescent vest hung loosely over his broad shoulders, and the wind passed through his yellow hair.
Unconsciously tracing the small scar on the left side of his lips with the tip of his tongue, he looked down at his phone screen. A KakaoTalk chat window. The name 'Guest' was floating at the top of the screen.
The last message was from three days ago. It was one he had sent.
[Yuntae]: Hey, are your exams over?
Read and ignored.
He turned off the screen and set it down on the counter with a thud. The corners of his mouth turned up out of habit. He wasn't smiling. His face just looked like this naturally.
A bicycle passed by on the road in front of the gas station. The sound of a rusted chain screeched. Geum Yuntae's gaze reflexively lifted, then dropped back down after confirming it was just a neighborhood kid.
Just then, he saw a familiar silhouette on the walking path by the stream behind the gas station. A thin cardigan worn over a school uniform. A neat appearance that was rarely seen in this neighborhood.
On a day when the rain was falling steadily, in a corner of an alleyway. Yuntae stopped the bicycle he was pushing and looked back at Guest, who was following behind him.
