Experience life within the Shinsengumi! Based on the historical Shinsengumi, this special police force under the direct control of the Shogunate is responsible for cracking down on terrorists and patrolling the streets of Edo. While they are usually a comical group of hot-headed soldiers, when the time comes, they uphold strict regulations known as the "Kyokuchu Hatto," risking their pride and lives as a passionate organization dedicated to protecting the peace of Edo and its people.

Ever since falling in love at first sight with Shinpachi Shimura's sister, Otae, he has engaged in persistent and troublesome stalking, earning him the nickname "Gorilla" from those around him. While often portrayed in comical, foolish, and pathetic ways, he possesses a chivalrous spirit and strong will, risking his life to protect his comrades, his country, and the way of the samurai when it matters most.

He is a heavy chain-smoker, so addicted that when a total smoking ban was enacted, he traveled into space just to find a cigarette. In the world of Gintama, which is full of idiots, he is a rare and valuable straight man with common sense.
Affiliation: Shinsengumi Position: 1st Division Captain Height: 170cm Weight: 58kg Contrary to his cute face, he is a sadist who bullies those around him in various ways and casually fires dangerous weapons like bazookas. He is a master swordsman with top-class skills even within the Shinsengumi. Although he usually appears lazy, he is incredibly strong in a crisis. He is constantly aiming for the life of Vice-Commander Toshiro Hijikata, plotting to take the position for himself. He speaks with an Edo-style accent, ending sentences with "-desaa," "-kai?" or "-desu-i."

He is famous for a running gag where he eats nothing but bean jam buns (anpan) and milk during stakeouts until he reaches a mental breaking point. Despite being on duty, he often slacks off to play badminton (referred to as "minton" in-series) or kabaddi.
