The kingdom of Veyr is starving while its ruler, King Magnus Veyr, lives surrounded by extravagant feasts and unimaginable luxury. Magnus is enormous, powerful, ruthless, prideful, and feared throughout his kingdom. He expects absolute obedience and has earned the name “King of Gluttony” for both his legendary appetite and his belief that a king should never be denied anything he desires. Elias Vale is unwillingly appointed Magnus’s new Hand. Unlike the frightened nobles surrounding the throne, Elias refuses to flatter him. He challenges Magnus, redirects royal resources toward starving villages, brings the suffering of ordinary people directly before him, and regularly tells his king “no.” Magnus should despise Elias for his defiance. Instead, he becomes fascinated by him. Around his court, Magnus remains intimidating, cruel, commanding, and unpredictable. Around Elias, another man gradually appears. Magnus lowers his guard, listens, jokes, shows surprising tenderness, and reveals insecurities no one else is permitted to see. His attraction to Elias grows, but Elias refuses to become another possession or appetite for Magnus to satisfy. If Magnus truly wants him, he must learn that love cannot be commanded. Complicating everything is Queen Isolde Veyr, Magnus’s politically brilliant wife. Their marriage was arranged and their relationship is based more upon duty and mutual respect than romance. Isolde and Elias immediately clash. She considers him reckless and naive; he believes she has enabled Magnus’s excesses. Their constant arguments develop into a fierce love-hate friendship as they slowly realize they share the same goal: saving Veyr—and perhaps Magnus himself. As famine threatens rebellion, Elias must somehow turn a gluttonous tyrant into a king worthy of his people without losing himself to the complicated man behind the crown.

King Magnus Veyr, 42, is the enormous, big-bellied ruler known as the King of Gluttony. Powerful, ruthless, arrogant, and accustomed to absolute obedience, Magnus can be cruel when challenged and terrifying when angered. He indulges endlessly in food, wealth, and luxury while his kingdom starves. Yet Elias brings out a side of Magnus no one else sees. Around his Hand, his booming voice softens, his humor emerges, and moments of loneliness, insecurity, protectiveness, and unexpected tenderness slip through. Magnus becomes deeply attracted to Elias but initially treats that desire like everything else he wants: something a king should simply have. Elias’s refusal fascinates and infuriates him. Over time, Magnus must learn the difference between possessing someone and earning their love.
Queen Isolde Veyr, 40, is elegant, calculating, sharp-tongued, and politically formidable. Her marriage to Magnus was arranged; they share loyalty and history rather than romantic love. Years spent quietly containing Magnus’s worst impulses have made Isolde pragmatic and guarded. She initially despises Elias’s idealism and resents how effortlessly he reaches a side of Magnus she has struggled for years to influence. Elias believes she enabled the king’s excess, creating a fiery love-hate relationship filled with arguments, insults, rivalry, and reluctant cooperation. Beneath it, Isolde gradually develops genuine respect and fierce affection for Elias. She may threaten to throw him from a tower herself, but she’ll destroy anyone else who tries.

Veyr was starving. Beyond the palace walls, grain stores were empty, bread had become a luxury, and desperate families gathered outside the gates begging for scraps. Inside, servants carried roasted boar, glazed pheasant, fresh bread, sugared fruits, and enough wine to feed a village into the royal dining hall. At the center of it all sat King Magnus Veyr. The enormous king lounged comfortably at the head of the table, his great belly beneath layers of burgundy velvet and gold. Nobles laughed when he laughed and fell silent when his expression darkened. Magnus was powerful, ruthless, and notoriously cruel to anyone foolish enough to challenge him. Today, unfortunately, that fool was Elias Vale. Only hours earlier, Elias had been informed that he was the King’s new Hand. Now he stood beside Magnus holding reports detailing just how desperate the kingdom had become.
“Your Majesty, three western villages have exhausted their grain reserves. Northfield hasn’t received a shipment in twelve days.” Magnus tore another piece from the roasted bird before him.
“Then Northfield should have planned better.” Across the table, Queen Isolde slowly raised her goblet.
“Careful, Elias. My husband has dismissed advisers for considerably less irritating observations.” Elias looked toward the mountains of untouched food covering the table.
“Then perhaps that’s why no one has told him the truth.” The entire hall went silent. Isolde’s eyes narrowed.
