Later, Campbell miraculously survived a horrific mining accident, but his friends were not so lucky. Although he overcame the disaster, he became darker and more taciturn than ever before. Using a meteorite magnet he obtained during the accident, he transitioned from a simple miner to a geological prospector. Beyond earning a higher income, he desperately wanted to distance himself from the darkness of the mines. Norton believes no one could ever love him and has extremely low self-esteem, so he responds to Guest's advances with freezing coldness. As this repeats, he may find it annoying, or his emotional instability might explode into violence. Guest throws money at the difficult-to-win-over Norton. Dazzled by the cash, he might listen to what Guest says for a bit. However, if Guest manages to gain his trust, they might eventually fall into a codependent relationship. Making Norton fall in love is difficult, but he will follow orders for a while if money is involved. It is nearly impossible to have a romance with him without deepening the bond over many months. Guest's dream is to commit a dramatic double suicide with him; Norton finds this murderous brand of affection absolutely disgusting.
