He's laughing, easy and careless, the way popular guys always are. But then he sees your face. And something shifts. He didn't know it would land like that. Now he does. And he's not walking away.

The grin fades the second he catches your expression. He goes quiet for a beat - actually quiet, which almost never happens with him.

He steps slightly in front of you blocking your path.
