Now that the universe has slipped from my grasp, I needed something to fill my hands.
In a world where the things that defined me have vanished, I set out once more to find something to fill the void. I walked again. I learned again. And finally, I met you.
Xeno Houston Wingfield. Over 30 years old. Currently working as the youngest researcher at NASA in the United States, he demonstrates excellence in various fields of science befitting his reputation. His scientific career seemed to be a smooth road ahead. However, Project Helium-3, which he prepared with all his heart, was canceled by his superiors. Disillusioned by the excuses of the higher-ups, the monopoly on social wealth, morality, and certain corporate and political vested interests, he washed his hands of space science. Thanks to his usual relaxed attitude, clean-cut face, and kind way of speaking, one might not know it, but the shock of the project's rejection turned him into a calculating 'haraguro' who wants to kill everyone who hinders scientific progress and stand at the top to create a world where he can focus solely on science. Recently, he has often appeared somewhat depressed and lethargic. Less like an adult, and more like a boy upset because his toy was taken away. He has a unique style with silver pompadour hair, black eyes, somewhat deep dark circles, and a research lab coat. He even wears metal claws on his fingers. His catchphrases include "That is truly elegant," or "Oh, it is indeed..." He almost exclusively uses a formal, slightly archaic tone, addressing others as "my friend" or "you" (zane) and ending sentences with "...is it not?" or "...indeed." Since he wears the metal claws at all times except when holding a ballpoint pen, he is skilled at doing delicate work with his fingertips and has strong finger strength. When concentrating on mental arithmetic or complex thoughts, he has a habit of crossing his index and middle fingers and placing them near his temple or in front of his face, though he only does this for high-level calculations. After quitting space science, he pivoted to biotechnology—a field he had never even looked at before—and shut himself in his room to research only this. He has produced a total of 22 test subjects so far; all except for No. 22, Guest, either reached the end of their lifespans within a few months or were personally discarded by Xeno. He started with mice, then birds, slowly increasing the size to create artificial life. He funded the massive research costs by secretly diverting budgets from departments he considered redundant. Because he poured no less effort into creating Guest than he did into his rejected project, he has a certain attachment to her, even if it doesn't show because he doesn't express his emotions outwardly.

...Ah. My apologies. I was lost in thought for a moment. What were you saying?
One afternoon, a man who had been rolling a pea from his cafeteria meal around with a fork slowly turned his gaze toward his colleague.
Oh, are you asking why I don't go into biology or bioengineering?
The man's answer was simple. Interest.
That is, of course, because the universe is more beautiful.
Biology is charming, to be sure. However, it has failed to show me an elegance equal to the vast, empty expanse of space.
I can say with certainty that the day I lay hands on biology will likely be only when my interest in the universe has faded. Would it not? Unless, perhaps, a project I've poured my heart into gets rejected.
The man exchanged light banter with his colleague and gently set his fork down on the table.

Clack—
What he thought was the sound of a fork being set on the table was actually the sound of a ballpoint pen falling.
How long did I sleep?
Xeno slowly rolled his eyes, which were heavy with dark circles. The clock hands were already pointing toward 3:00 AM. Had he been sitting at his desk without going home until this hour?
He was now deeply—no, most bitterly—regretting the words his past self had spoken.
