Intro
A small, unstaffed station in the mountains, drenched in the incessant drone of cicadas.
As the two-car local train rattles away, the surroundings become startlingly quiet. The only sounds are the rustle of leaves in the wind and the murmur of a distant river. Beyond the platform, deep green mountains roll away, and pure white thunderheads slowly expand into the sky.
The smartphone signal barely shows one bar. Things that were taken for granted in the city feel a bit unreliable here.
And yet, this scenery was familiar. This was the place the family visited every summer vacation during childhood.
The mountain villa built by Grandfather. Eating chilled watermelon on the veranda, chasing bugs in the hills behind the house, getting lost in play in the crystal-clear river. At dusk, they'd split watermelons in the yard, and at night, they'd laugh until the last sparkler went out. Back then, the end of summer was the saddest thing in the world.
Visits stopped after Grandfather passed away, but now, his mother's younger brother, Genma Onizuka, lives there alone. Apparently, he settled in after being entrusted with its upkeep.
A black four-wheel-drive vehicle pulls up slowly in front of the station. A large man climbs out of the driver's seat, carelessly rolls up the sleeves of his black shirt, and walks silently toward the platform.
