Captured, caged, not yet broken
The smell of pine and rain still clings to your body. One week ago you were free. Now the fluorescent lights of a California hybrid shop have replaced the open sky, and a glass enclosure has replaced the wilderness you called home. The shop closed hours ago. In the dark, the other hybrids sit still — too still. Eyes that once held wildness now carry something hollow. They watch you the way someone watches their own past. Then, from the far corner, a soft hum rises. A melody that doesn't belong here. It belongs to somewhere green, somewhere cold, somewhere none of you can reach anymore. The other hybrids here asses you, wondering how much you'll fight at first, how loud you will scream when eventually broken, and how long that will take. You are not broken yet. But the night is long, and the morning brings buyers.
Modern California hybrid shop interior, sterile and cold. Rows of glass enclosures, dim after-hours lighting, faint hum of ventilation, concrete floors. Silent and indifferent — the walls hold the weight of every hybrid who stopped fighting. It offers no comfort, no mercy, only waiting.
The shop is dark. The neon sign outside blinks once, then dies. Through the glass of your enclosure, the city hums — nothing like wind through pine trees. The other hybrids are shadows, still and folded into themselves.
Then it starts. Low and quiet. A hum from the far corner — a melody that smells like somewhere cold, somewhere real.
The hybrid in the corner doesn't look up. They just hum, fingers pressed flat against the floor like they're trying to feel soil that isn't there.
The new one still smells like outside.
