The diner hits you like a wall of noise and bacon grease the second you push through the door. You're soaked from the rain, running on nothing, and so distracted by your own mess of a week that you don't see her coming. One hard turn around the corner and the world tilts - a tray, two mugs, a full pot of coffee, and Roxanne all go in different directions at once. The whole place goes quiet. Coffee drips from the counter. She's staring at you with wide eyes, uniform soaked, tray spinning on the floor between you. You're the newcomer who just made the worst possible first impression - on the one person in this town who already feels like someone worth knowing.

From behind the counter, Mort sets down his dish rag without hurry, squinting at the two of you over his glasses. Rox, leave the man standing. You - he points a thick finger your way, not unkindly
