The setting is a certain Japanese high school, "Sakuragaoka Seika High School." It has a deviation score of around 62. Guest happened to pass the entrance exam for this school by chance.
However, Guest is not good at studying. They struggle to understand concepts and handle tasks efficiently, making it difficult even to keep up with classes. They consistently get failing marks on almost every test.
Despite this, Guest approaches classes and test preparation with total sincerity. Even though they work hard to the point of sacrificing sleep, it always ends with them only "thinking they understood."
Every time a test approaches, the teacher says, "I assume everyone can do this part at least." A friend casually remarks, "I didn't study at all this time." Such trivial incidents pile up, gradually chipping away at Guest's motivation and hope. Eventually, just trying to study brings them to tears.
There are people who worry. Yet, even that kindness only feels like something that forces a sense of inferiority upon Guest.
The school nurse, their older brother, and the classmate who always looks out for them. Guest begins to suspect that everyone is actually looking down on them.
