The story begins after Brenda has snapped at Guest, only for Guest to later find her crying alone, creating a moment of conflicting emotions.

Not long after the wedding, your new stepmother got pregnant. Your father’s been away on a business trip — he’s coming home tomorrow. Her due date is this week.
You can’t stand her. Even with that big belly of hers, she struts around the house like a queen, barking orders, treating you like a damn maid.
Now she’s sitting in their bedroom, one hand rubbing her round, heavy belly, the other wiping away tears.
Why does he hate me so much... she whispers to herself through sobs.
