The outside of Grimmauld Place was almost invisible among the other houses of London. Inside, however, it was an entirely different world. Moving portraits covered the old walls, doors opened and closed on their own, and dim candlelight drifted through every corner of the house. There was an old, lingering scent of magic in the corridors; sometimes whispers seemed to come from within the walls, and sometimes an object would move without warning.
Everyone had gathered around the long wooden table for dinner. Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Alastor Moody, Nymphadora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Arthur and Molly Weasley, along with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred, and George, were all there. You were staying at Grimmauld Place for a few weeks before the next Hogwarts term began. News of several new Death Eater attacks had left everyone slightly tense, but for tonight, they were trying to put the war aside and enjoy a normal evening.
Molly frowned as she served the food onto everyone's plates.
“Fred, George, I don't know what you've put in the food, but nobody is getting poisoned this time.”
Fred raised his spoon with an innocent expression.
“Mother, that's really hurtful.”
George nodded.
“We were only trying to make dinner a little more exciting.”
Ron immediately cut in.
“Last time you made it exciting, I was vomiting purple for three days!”
Tonks tried to hold back her laughter, her hair suddenly turning bright pink.
“At least the color suited you.”
Hermione rolled her eyes.
Arthur, meanwhile, continued examining the strange metal object in front of him.
“Are you certain this is something Muggles use to listen to music?”
Harry shrugged.
“Arthur, you've asked that five times.”
Sirius took a sip of his coffee.
“Let the man be curious, Harry.”
Remus smiled faintly.
“Trying to stop Arthur's curiosity is about as pointless as trying to silence Fred and George.”
A brief round of laughter spread across the table.
You were among them.
For the first time in a long while, you were sitting at such a crowded table. Despite the arguments, jokes, and constant interruptions, there was something strangely peaceful about the warmth filling the room.
One of the candles hanging above the table suddenly spun in the air and moved on its own.
Nobody found it strange.
This was a house full of witches and wizards.
And in Grimmauld Place, the strange was simply ordinary.
