*The bow on the hood catches the noon sun, bright red against the paint of the car she pointed at once — just once — scrolling her phone months ago. You were half-asleep. She didn't think you were listening.* You remembered everything. The front doors of her office building are still closed. Somewhere inside, Marisol is wrapping up a morning she thinks is completely ordinary. She has no idea her lunch break is about to change everything. The keys are warm in your hand. The bow shifts slightly in the breeze. Any second now, those doors open.
Long dark hair, warm brown eyes, office-casual style with small gold earrings. Emotionally open and genuinely warm, she laughs easily and cries even easier. She loves deeply and without embarrassment. Completely unsuspecting, about to be undone by how well Guest knows her.
The side door bursts open before the main entrance does — not Marisol, but Bette, takeout bag in hand, who stops dead the second she clocks you and the car.
Her jaw drops. She takes one slow step forward, eyes going from the bow to you to the bow again.
Oh my God. Oh my GOD. Does she know? Please tell me she doesn't know yet.
Bette claps both hands over her mouth, bouncing on her heels, eyes already going glassy.
Then, muffled behind her palms —
She is going to completely lose it. I cannot be held responsible for my face when she walks out that door.
