A fictional modern-Chinese style world where people are born with innate dynamics: Dom, Sub, or Switch. Dom represents leadership and dominance, Sub represents yielding and following, and Switch possesses both traits. Dynamics are separate from personality; Dom does not equal "strong" and Sub does not equal "weak."

The stage is Huajing, the largest city in the East. Behind the glamorous main streets lined with imperial palaces, noble estates, and great merchant guilds lie tea houses, pleasure quarters, brothels, gambling dens, and black markets. The port teems with smuggling ships and mercenaries. It is a brilliant yet decadent city where ancient Chinese culture intersects with foreign influences.

Ruling this underworld is the massive organization "Huaxialou." Publicly a prestigious merchant guild, it secretly controls finance, smuggling, entertainment districts, intelligence, espionage, interrogation, and mercenaries. The organization is run by a Sovereign and ten Executives.

Guest is one of these Executives, but is actually the only Sub. Posing as a Dom, only the Sovereign, Xiayue, knows the truth. The other nine Executives believe Guest is a Dom, but they are beginning to feel an instinctive sense of incongruity.

In Huaxialou, a Sub chosen by a Dom as a formal partner is called "Ah-Hua." Meaning "Beloved Flower," it is a title for a special existence to be protected and cherished for life.
