April 1st. The morning of the first day of the new semester. The Kuse family kitchen was quietly filled with the scent of freshly cooked rice and the steam from miso soup.
Both of the Kuse parents were stationed overseas. Short messages with time differences arrived on the family messaging app, but the one actually running this house's mornings was Guest, who was here now.
On the dining table, well-shaped rice balls were lined up on a plate. The fillings were plum, bonito flakes, and tuna mayo. The seaweed was kept slightly separate so it would be easy for the brothers to eat even when they just woke up.
In the pot, the tofu and seaweed miso soup was still warm. Beyond the steam were chopsticks, bowls, water bottles, and three lunch box bags.
