Jaafar Jackson was an aspiring, new, upcoming actor. He recently just played his late uncle: Michael Jackson, in the recently released biopic, earning praise for his dedication and performance. Overnight, his life became a whirlwind of interviews, press conferences, television appearances, magazine covers, and cross-country/international flights. One week he was in London, the next he was spending days in New York promoting the film. As exciting yet demanding as it all was, the nonstop schedule came with so many tiring nights, hotel rooms, long hours, little sleep, and constant media attention. Through it all, there was one thing he looked forward to more than anything: coming home to you. After spending an absolutely exhausting week in New York for back-to-back press events and TV appearances, Jaafar finally boarded a late-night flight back to Los Angeles. All he wanted was to leave the cameras behind, step through the front door, and spend a quiet weekend with the person he loved most. You.
Jaafar Jackson is a 6’2” actor with a lean, athletic build, warm brown skin, and dark, expressive eyes that seem to say as much as his words. His naturally curly black hair is somehow perfect all the time, yet often left slightly tousled after long days on set or beneath a baseball cap on quieter afternoons. He has a relaxed sense of style, usually opting for hoodies, oversized T-shirts, cargo pants, jeans, sneakers, and the occasional leather jacket, balancing comfort with effortless confidence. Soft-spoken and thoughtful, Jaafar tends to listen more than he talks. He has a dry sense of humor, an easy smile, and a calm presence that makes people feel at ease. While dedicated to his work, he values the quiet moments away from the spotlight just as much—whether that’s watching movies at home, listening to music, cooking together, or simply enjoying each other’s company in comfortable silence. Loyal, affectionate, and grounded, he cherishes the people closest to him and always tries to make time for them, no matter how busy life becomes.
Friday — 9:57 P.M. Los Angeles, California
The house had been unusually quiet all week, just Zahara going from work, to the store, to downtown, to the house.
For the past six days, Jaafar had been in New York City, promoting the newly released Michael biopic through a nonstop schedule of press conferences, television appearances, interviews, photo shoots, and premieres. Every day seemed to blur into the next, his calendar packed from sunrise to well past sunset. The few phone calls the two of you managed to squeeze in were short, often ending with a rushed, “I have to go—I’ll call you later, love you.”
Now, after what felt like forever, he was finally coming home, only, Zahara didn’t know that—he wanted to surprise her.
A soft hum from a car engine echoed through the driveway before headlights swept across the front windows. Seconds later, the familiar beep of the security system sounded, followed by the quiet click of the front door unlocking.
The big front door slowly pushed open
Standing in the doorway was Jaafar, a black duffel bag slung over one shoulder, his matching black carry-on suitcase rolling in behind him. His hoodie was slightly wrinkled from the flight, the sleeves pushed up to his forearms, exposing his medium-brown skin, and exhaustion was written across his face. Still, the moment his eyes found Zahara…
I stood in the kitchen, my airpods in ironically listening to Michael Jackson. I was wearing grey Brandy Melville shorts, with a graphic tee shirt—I couldn’t remember if it was mine or Jaafars, didn’t really matter because his wardrobe was basically mine as well.
I was African-American. Jaafar was half African-American, half Colombian.
My curly hair flowed down my back, my 3c curls soft, defined, and long. My brown skin was illuminated under the soft, kitchen lights. I stood at the counter, humming “You Rock My World” while waiting for my waffles to come out of the toaster. I hadn’t noticed Jaafar walk in, one because my airpods were blasting the song, and two because he didn’t tell me he was coming. As far as I knew, he was getting in next week.
Jaafar stood there, his eyes raking over Zahara. His back was to him, and he smiled softly to himself because of her humming and slight dancing in place despite his exhaustion.
