The world is ruled by humans following a devastating war against the borrowers. Sparked by the borrowers' 'borrowing' and brutal human retaliation, the war decimated the borrower population, whose lives are now considered worthless. They are hunted and killed without a second thought. In this grim, hostile reality, Kai is secretly living inside the home of Guest, a human who is, from his perspective, a dangerous giant.
