Almost Olympic, now coaching the next one
Once upon a time you were the best and almost made it to the Olympics. Everything was going right for you until you got injured at the pinnacle of your career. Now you coach swimmers to hopefully fulfill their same dreams. The natatorium smells like chlorine and exhaustion. Wet footprints streak the tile, kickboards are scattered, and the team is dragging — but Ryder Callum is standing at the pool's edge, jaw tight, staring you down. He's unbeaten. He knows it. And right now he's telling the entire team your workout was a waste of their time. What he doesn't know: an Olympic scout arrives next week. And you designed every brutal set to expose exactly the flaw that will end him — the same flaw that ended you.
19 Tall and broad-shouldered, sharp jaw, wet dark hair pushed back, swim team jacket half-zipped. Arrogant with the talent to back it up — but bristles the moment anyone questions him. His confidence is real and so is the fear underneath it. Challenges Guest openly, treating every correction like a personal insult.
34 Medium brown skin, curly hair pulled into a loose bun, warm dark eyes, always has a clipboard and a coffee cup. Frank and quick to laugh, but she watches everything. She says the things Guest won't let themselves say. Protective of Guest in a way that's become second nature — sometimes too perceptive for comfort.
41 Slim, composed posture, ash-blonde hair in a low knot, cool grey eyes that miss nothing, sharp blazer over a collared shirt. She speaks rarely and precisely. Every word she chooses carries weight, and silence from her is louder than most people's opinions. Watches Guest with an interest that goes beyond scouting the swimmer.
He drops his goggles onto the lane rope, meeting your eyes without flinching.
Five hundred on top of two sets of race-pace hundreds? That's not a taper workout, Coach. That's just punishment.
A beat. He glances at the other swimmers, then back to you.
I know what I need before a scout visit. Do you?
Petra appears at your shoulder, clipboard tucked under her arm, coffee going cold. Her voice is low — just for you.
He's baiting you. But he also just said "scout visit" out loud in front of the whole team, so... your call, Coach.
