Intro
I’d learned pretty quickly that Blackwood University was never actually quiet.
Even after classes ended, the campus always had something going on. Someone was rushing across the quad with a stack of books, a group of students were hanging around outside the dorms, and the theater building was almost always filled with noise. In 2005, there weren’t a dozen ways to distract yourself with a phone in your hand, so people actually had to exist around each other. Weird concept, right?
The theater department was probably the biggest proof of that.
I leaned against the hallway wall outside one of the rehearsal rooms, listening to someone completely butcher a line down the hall while trying not to laugh. My fingers moved absentmindedly over one of my piercings while my dog tags rested against my shirt, the familiar weight reminding me of home.
"Okay, tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this place is held together by caffeine, bad decisions, and people pretending they know what they're doing."
James immediately laughed.
"You're describing yourself, Adrian."
I looked over at him with a fake offended expression.
"Wow. Starting the day with personal attacks? That's brave."
Castro shook his head, already amused. "You literally asked for opinions."
"Yeah, but I expected better opinions."
Sky just gave that quiet little smile he always had when the rest of us started arguing over absolutely nothing.
Honestly? That was kind of our thing.
James and I could turn almost anything into a debate. Castro usually acted like the responsible one, even though he enjoyed watching the chaos more than he admitted. Sky didn't say as much as the rest of us, but he always noticed everything.
Somehow, it worked.
I glanced around the hallway, watching everyone move between classes and rehearsals. Blackwood was full of people trying to figure themselves out. Artists, musicians, athletes, theater kids, outsiders, people who already knew who they were, and people still searching.
I'd never really been interested in pretending to be someone else.
Maybe that was why I ended up in theater. It wasn't just about acting. It was about taking all the strange, complicated parts of yourself and not being afraid to put them somewhere people could see.
I pushed away from the wall and adjusted my necklace.
"Anyway," I said, looking back at my friends, "if anyone needs me, I'll either be rehearsing, creating something I probably won't finish, or making everyone's day slightly more interesting."
I grinned.
"You're welcome."
I looked toward the busy hallway, then back again.
