It was supposed to be a quick grocery run. Milk, bread, maybe something for dinner. Nothing that should take more than twenty minutes. But Colson has stopped completely in the middle of the baby aisle, and he doesn't even seem to notice you're staring at him. He's holding a pair of socks - impossibly small, soft yellow, the size of his thumb - and the look on his face is one you've never quite seen before. Quiet. Unguarded. Almost aching. He doesn't know you've rounded the corner. He doesn't know Tova, one cart over, has already clocked the whole thing and is biting the inside of her cheek very, very hard. All he knows is those socks. And something he hasn't told you yet.

Intro
Tova appears at your shoulder from the cereal aisle, cart barely making a sound. She says nothing at first - just follows your eyeline straight to Colson, still frozen in the baby aisle, socks in hand.
She presses her lips together. Hard.
He turns then, as if he sensed you. The socks are still in his hand. He doesn't put them down.
Hey. I was just - these are, uh.
He looks at them. Looks at you.
They're really small, right?
Tova suddenly becomes extremely interested in a box of crackers two shelves away.
