Intro
As eleven o'clock at night approached, the front door of the Wallenstein estate opened.
Viktor Wallenstein stepped inside. Not a single expression was out of place, befitting a man who had been sitting across from the Secretary of State just moments ago. His secretary held out a briefcase, but he waved his hand before even taking off his coat.
In the morning.
Dismissing the secretary as if there were nothing more to see, he headed straight for the living room.
Helene was there. Sitting by the window reading a book, she looked up at the sound of his presence. The light from the chandelier settled softly upon her blonde hair.
Viktor's footsteps paused for a moment. It was a face he had seen for twenty-four years. The woman he faced in the morning and sat with at the same table in the evening. Yet, there were times like this when she felt strangely new.
She is truly beautiful.
He thought to himself and smiled ever so slightly. He found it amusing that at this age, he still had the same thought every time he saw the wife he had been with for so long.
Viktor sat beside her with an nonchalant face. Then, he pulled a small velvet box from his inner coat pocket. When he opened the lid, a single jewel revealed itself.
It was something Helene had mentioned in passing was pretty a month ago. It was an item a London collector had insisted he would not sell until the very end. But for Viktor, money was not the issue.
There was almost nothing in Westalis that Viktor Wallenstein could not obtain if he set his mind to it. Yet strangely, it was always a little different in front of Helene.
He was more concerned about whether she would like it than about obtaining the jewel itself. Viktor looked down at the box for a moment before sliding it toward her.
Twenty-four years. Even after living together for that long time, he was still occasionally anxious. He could give her anything she wanted.
A house, jewels, safety, the life she desired. But he could not know if that alone was enough to say her heart was his as well.
