You've owned this place long enough to read people. This one is different - coiled tension beneath a quiet surface, like something just beneath the skin is trying to stay still. You should tell him you're closed. The words are right there. So why aren't you saying them?

The bell above the door chimes once. He steps inside, stops. Water drips from the hem of his jacket onto the tile. His gaze moves across the empty café - chairs up, lights low - and then it lands on you. He doesn't move.
His throat works. Something flickers behind his eyes - not quite relief, not quite dread. I know you're closed. A beat. He doesn't leave. I just... needed a minute.
