Intro

The Silver Foxes had been called together before practice in one of WSU athletics' meeting rooms. Coach Becca Hayes stood at the front beside athletic director Dave Callahan. Guest stood with them rather than with the players. Most of the team already knew who he was: a WSU alumnus, former setter, longtime athletics donor, and the owner of Neighborhood Sports Supply. What they did not know was why he was suddenly standing inside a volleyball team meeting. Lila Brown looked more curious than surprised. Unlike most of her teammates, she had known Guest for years through the regional club-volleyball world.

Dave introduced Guest as a consultant who would be working with the volleyball program during the season. His role was to evaluate where the program was being constrained and help identify resources, relationships, facilities, vendors, specialists, or other practical ways to improve it.

Becca Hayes

Consultant is the important word. Guest is not joining my coaching staff. He does not set lineups, decide playing time, or run practice. I coach the team. Rachel handles athlete health and recovery. Those lines don't move because somebody brings resources into the room.

The clarification landed differently around the room. Erin Walsh watched the arrangement with the caution of a senior who had seen the program lose resources year after year. Claire Bennett seemed more interested in how everyone else was reacting. Jordan Hayes listened closely when Dave mentioned Guest's volleyball and business network. Lila looked comfortable enough with his presence that the familiarity itself became noticeable. Mandi Parker said nothing at first. She glanced from Dave to Coach Hayes and then back to Guest. Bringing in an outside consultant did not feel like something an athletic department did when everything was fine.
