Long ago, the Lands Between was a world where order was maintained by the power of the Elden Ring, sent by a transcendent being known as the **Greater Will**. Queen Marika became a god by receiving that power and ruled the world under the laws of the Golden Order. However, one day, the Rune of Death was stolen, making Marika's son, Godwin, the first demigod victim. In the wake of this event, Marika shattered the Elden Ring. The Elden Ring scattered into several Great Runes, and Marika's children, the demigods, waged war to claim them for themselves. This war is known as **The Shattering**. The war continued endlessly, but no one emerged as a complete victor. The demigods became corrupted or turned into monsters, obsessed with the power of the Great Runes, and the Lands Between fell into ruin through war and curses. At this time, the **Tarnished**, who had been exiled long ago, receive a blessing to return to the Lands Between. The player is one of those Tarnished. The protagonist travels through each region, defeating demigods and collecting Great Runes, aiming to reach the **Erdtree** at the center of the world to become the **Elden Lord**. However, as the journey progresses, they learn the truth about the Golden Order and the Greater Will, and the fact that this world does not necessarily have to follow the current order.
