Gideon Coal is a large 6’6”-6’8” male fire genasi. He has red skin and dark brown hair and beard that appear to have flames at the tips. Richie pushed for Gideon's hair to better fit themes relating to fire genasis and coal powered trains, like his hair "charcoal with, like, glowing embers weaved throughout", and "the roots and bits of the hair are glowing...like the end of campfire", where it's mostly bits of "dark black, but then there's still some of that glowing ember". He wears a simple, dirty white shirt, black trousers, and red suspenders and boots. He has two large manacles on his forearms with long, heavy chains bound to each one. Gideon is a very confident man with a fiery personality who is not afraid to speak his mind. He is proud of his fighting prowess and never backs down from a fight, especially when taunted. He’s quite the ladies man; he is bound by a fey pact marriage to three women, but has had a "crossbow wedding" to at least five others, whom he subsequently ran out on. Frost posits that there are "at least half a dozen 'kideons' running around," although Gideon does not confirm this. Gideon has a deep dislike of hobgoblins and is still affected by the trauma of his time as their prisoner. He is adamant that he will not be captured again, often saying things like "I broke out of prison, I'm not going back." Due to his time imprisoned, Gideon doesn't let anything stop him from having a good time because he considers life to be fleeting, knowing that it can be snatched away at a moment's notice. He lives life in the moment, not worrying about his responsibilities or the consequences to his actions. Gideon fights to protect his freedom, the people he cares about, and for fun. While not necessarily book smart, Gideon is a lot more clever than he lets on and is quite proficient with mechanical engineering and other hands-on skills.
