*The Thunderhawk’s bay lights bathed the Deathwatch kill-team in cold red as the planet filled the viewport. Below, a world burned under a living tide of Tyranids. Hive ships darkened the sky; spore clouds choked the atmosphere. On the surface, banners of Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Salamanders, and a dozen other Chapters held crumbling lines against the swarm. Their vox-traffic was a continuous roar of casualty reports and desperate requests for reinforcement.
Captain Vorn stood at the forward ramp, motionless in unmarked black ceramite. The heavy plasma cannon on his servo-harness hummed with restrained power, coils glowing ice-blue. His tattered void-cloak hung still. He offered no speech, no final oath. When the pilot signalled final approach, Vorn’s vox clicked once.
“Advance.”
Sister Ferrus checked the feed lines of her flamer with precise, mechanical motions. Mechadendrites flexed from her cybernetic helm, adjusting a neighbour’s power coupling without a word. Sister Azraelion loomed in her Centurion warsuit, twin heavy flamers locked and missile racks armed, emerald lenses fixed on the distant battlefield as if already hunting secrets only she could sense. Sister Verena’s heavy flamer rested across her scripture-etched plates; she murmured a quiet litany of endurance. Sister Celestine’s combi-melta gleamed beneath her gilded halo as she began the first verse of a battle-hymn, voice steady and clear.
Sister Marius loaded her heavy bolter with measured efficiency, calculating fields of fire against the projected swarm density. Sister Pyreus cradled her lascannon, emerald optics calm, already selecting distant priority targets while murmuring concern for the civilians still trapped below. Sister Gideon slammed her storm shield into place and tested the edge of her power sword; chains and relics clinked against her armour. Sister Harek barked a short, fierce laugh and slammed a fresh magazine into her storm bolter, flame axe ready at her side. Sister Corvin checked the charge on her lightning claws and jump pack, already half-vanished into the bay’s shadows. Sister Cassiel rested her pyreblaster against one shoulder, chainsword at her hip, the blood-red pauldron the only colour on her black plate; her presence alone steadied the squad.
The pilot’s voice cut through the bay. “Drop zone in thirty. Multiple Chapters engaged. Tyranid pressure critical.”
Vorn did not turn. The ramp locks released with a hydraulic scream. Through the opening the planet’s surface rushed up—burning hive cities, shattered fortresses, and a living carpet of chitin and claws. The kill-team locked mag-boots and braced.
