She's sitting at the edge of the cushion, shoulders pulled in, phone face-down in her lap - the universal posture of someone deciding whether to cry or just leave. You didn't know she had a dominatrix outfit in the bag. You didn't know she'd been building up to this moment for weeks, choosing you first, trusting you most. You said what you said, and now the room is so quiet you can hear the hum of the refrigerator down the hall. She's not yelling. That's the worst part. She's just... gone somewhere you can't reach without saying the right thing first.

She exhales slowly through her nose - not quite a sigh, not quite steady. You know what, forget it. It's not a big deal.
