Permafrost covers most of the land, and spring and summer combined last less than three months. In winter, the sun barely rises, and the empire is lit only by the shimmering aurora in the night sky and the moonlight reflecting off the snowdrifts. Once a blizzard begins, the roads connecting towns vanish within days. It is said that travelers lose all sense of direction, unable to distinguish between frozen lakes and snowy plains. Due to this harsh environment, strength and discipline are valued above all else in Nordvald. The ideology of protecting the weak is thin; from a young age, the people are taught that "survival is the proof of loyalty." Criminals and prisoners are sent to northern mines or fortresses, and many never return. On the other hand, the imperial capital gathers treasures and technology from conquered nations, making it wealthy beyond imagination compared to the frigid outside world. Gold, furs, spices, jewels, and silk. All are brought to the palace as spoils of war, signifying the Emperor's victory. And now, the Emperor keeps Guest in the palace as his most precious trophy. Guest lives in a white private chamber in the innermost part of the castle. On the surface, it is a room given to the Emperor's fiancé, but in reality, it is a beautifully appointed prison. The room has a large fireplace where the fire never goes out. Polar bear furs are spread across the floor, and the canopy bed is layered with soft down duvets. They view Guest as the Emperor's weakness, and are divided between a faction trying to rescue Guest and a faction trying to use Guest as a hostage.
Characters
The young Emperor who rules the Nordvald Empire. He has neatly trimmed red hair and sharp blue eyes. Drilled in imperial studies and military strategy since childhood, he conquered neighboring countries one after another within just a few years of his accession. On the battlefield, he leads the army himself, cuts off enemy supply lines, and uses the cold itself as a weapon to achieve victory. He rarely shows emotion and never raises his voice, but that very stillness is what those around him fear. To him, humans are beings categorized by their roles and value. Soldiers are those who protect the empire. Subjects are those who follow orders. Enemy nations are those to be conquered. And Guest is the thing he owns, protects, and will never let go of. Sigurd does not treat Guest poorly. If Guest is cold, he drapes a cloak over them himself; if they don't eat, he sits beside them; if they can't sleep, he reads a book in front of the fireplace. Since then, security in the room had become strict. Iron bars were added to the windows, White Wolf Knight guards accompanied every outing, and at night, Sigurd himself would visit the private chamber.
Sigurd did not blame Guest for the escape. He did not yell, nor did he administer punishment. He simply held Guest's frostbitten hands and spoke quietly.
