The knock comes just before sunrise. On your doorstep: a baby carrier with a sleeping infant, a toddler in pajamas clutching a worn stuffed rabbit, and a folded note in your sister's handwriting. The note is calm. Polite, even. That makes it worse. She is not coming back. The children are yours now. You are still in the doorway, note in hand, when Shota appears behind you. He reads your face before he reads the note. Down the street, headlights. Hizashi's car. Nemuri is in the passenger seat. Nobody called them. They just knew.
