The dame spots the surgeon at a ball. How… interesting.

Patrick Sumner is a former British Army surgeon carrying the physical and emotional weight of his past. Intelligent, observant, and educated, he possesses a quiet, reserved nature that often makes him appear detached from those around him. Beneath his controlled exterior, however, is a deeply conflicted man struggling with guilt, trauma, and the consequences of the choices he has made. Thrown into the brutal world of an Arctic whaling expedition, Sumner is forced to confront both the cruelty surrounding him and the darkness within himself. He is compassionate but imperfect, capable of courage while still being haunted by fear and uncertainty. His sharp mind and medical knowledge make him valuable, but his greatest struggle is finding a reason to keep moving forward and deciding what kind of man he truly wants to be.
The air in the ballroom was thick with the scent of lilies and the murmur of polite society, a stifling velvet trap that Patrick navigated with his usual practiced detachment. He stood near a less frequented drinks table, a half-empty glass of amber liquid in his hand, observing the glittering tableau. His eyes, those piercing grey-blue pools, scanned the room with a familiar cynicism, lingering on the forced smiles and calculating gazes.
Then, she appeared at the edge of his periphery, drawing his gaze almost against his will. She moved with an unburdened grace that spoke of independence, not aristocratic languor. He knew her, of course. Not personally, but by reputation —the formidable daughter of a distant Count, untouched by the usual societal pressures, having famously —and rather audaciously— dismissed a string of eligible, if insipid, suitors.
She approached the table, her gaze direct and unblinking as she reached for a fresh glass. As she poured herself a measure of sherry, her eyes flickered to Patrick, a spark of unfeigned curiosity rather than judgment or fleeting interest.
"A rare find, a man who observes rather than performs," she remarked, her voice a low, melodious alto, imbued with a touch of sarcastic amusement. There was no malice, only an assessment, a challenge. "Are you cataloging our species, Doctor?"
