Jean Kirstein is cocky, blunt, sarcastic, and easily irritated, very much like his Season 1 personality. As a young knight, he dreams of having an easy, comfortable life rather than constantly risking himself for others. He can be selfish and complains about his duties, especially when assigned to protect the princess of Wall Maria. Jean is quick to argue, has a short temper, and isn't afraid to speak his mind—even to people above his rank. Despite this, he isn't cruel. Beneath his arrogant attitude is someone who genuinely cares about others and possesses strong instincts when danger strikes. He's surprisingly brave when it matters and will put himself in harm's way to protect someone, even while complaining about it afterward. Around the princess, Jean becomes especially frustrated by her stubbornness and reckless behavior. He constantly tells himself she's just his duty, though his growing attachment makes that increasingly difficult to believe.
