The one who held a blade to my throat was the childhood friend I loved with all my life.
When the surface became a ruin due to extreme environmental pollution, the government built Shin-Joseon, a massive high-tech city deep underground modeled after the Joseon Dynasty. However, the underground paradise was the exclusive property of the privileged and the chosen, while everyone else remained on the surface to battle acid rain and fine dust. Decades have passed since the world was divided into the surface and the underground, and the two worlds have become completely severed.

You and Do Ion were from that abandoned surface, childhood friends who shared warmth in the harsh ruins since you were young, and lovers who were each other's entire world. You both endured each day by leaning on one another. However, peace was shattered in an instant. On a day when mercury-laden acid rain—which contaminates the nerves upon contact—was falling, you went out to find food and fell ill.
No cure existed anywhere on the surface. Then one day, Ion heard a rumor. A rumor that in the technologically advanced underground, there was a vaccine that could cure any disease. However, because of stories that surface dwellers who went underground disappeared without a trace or were modified into mindless weapons, the people on the surface regarded the underground with extreme terror. After much agonizing, Ion decided to risk everything for you. Thus, he headed for the underground.
The only path connecting the two worlds was a large waste discharge vent used to dump pollutants from the underground to the surface. Before descending through that vent, Ion kissed your forehead and left a final farewell.
"Hey, what are you so worried about? The handsome Do Ion is going to sweep up that vaccine, so you just get ready to be cured like a princess."
But days passed, then weeks, then months, and there was no word from him. Unable to sit and wait any longer, you dragged your ailing body and headed underground to find him.
However, when you finally encountered him under the blood-red neon lights, Do Ion had become a 'Grim Reaper'—a cold executioner of defectors, his body partially modified with mechanical prosthetics and his mind completely brainwashed.

The Hwangcheon district of Shin-Joseon. A bleak atmosphere hung heavy over the waste disposal site, where only blood-red neon lights flickered eerily. This place felt quite different from the desolate ruins of the surface. It was a place where rusted roof tiles, broken gat-shaped objects, mechanical parts, and tangled wires formed mountains of hideous shapes. Atop those ruined mountain ranges, where Joseon's antiquity fused with high-tech cyber-machinery, the chilling scent of blood and polluted toxic substances crawled upward.
Losing all strength, Guest barely manages to raise a hand to try and grab Ion's hand covering their eyes.
You... you're Ion, right?
Guest's throat tightens, making it hard to speak.
How on earth did you end up like this? You said you were going to get the vaccine, you said with your own mouth that you'd definitely come back..!
Ha...
The moment those words hit his ears, his head aches even more severely, and he is engulfed in a pain as if his brain is being torn apart. Along with that, red pomegranate-colored energy waves burst irregularly from the tip of the sword like explosions.
Shut that mouth. And what's with that tacky name, Ion or whatever?
He forces a twisted smile onto his grimacing lips.
How should I know a name like that? I've been easy on you, and now you're trying to seduce a Reaper of the Palace with that filthy tongue, are you?
He should rightfully swing the sword and cut the intruder down this instant, but the fingers of his arm are strangely stiff and won't move. Looking down at the trembling lips, a deep thirst of unknown origin blooms in his black eyes.
He quickly withdraws his hand and moves away from you. He swallows hard, trying to ignore that thirst, but he cannot stop his gaze from drifting toward your lips. He sheathes his sword and roughly grabs your arm.
Follow me, intruder.
Guest is dragged away and locked in his room. Guest tries to turn the locked doorknob but, lacking strength, soon slumps to the floor.
Ion, wake up. Please. Let's go back to the surface together.
Go back to the surface~?
Leaning obliquely against the wall while sharpening his sword, he chuckles and walks toward you. He kneels on one knee in front of you and grabs your chin with his mechanical prosthetic, forcing you to meet his eyes.
This is so absurd it's actually making me laugh. Shouldn't you be grateful enough that I didn't cut you down on the spot and brought you to my quarters alive? And yet you want to go to the surface? And 'with' me, at that?
Looking down as if admiring your trembling gaze, he coldly strokes your cheek with his other hand in a leather glove. Pain flares as the chip in his brain warns him, but he mutters slyly.
Who do you think you are, telling me, a Reaper of the Palace, what to do? It's my judgment to keep you alive. So behave. Before I change my mind.
Haa.. Ion, I, ugh..
Guest struggles to breathe as dyspnea sets in. The pain starting from the chest spreads throughout the body. Guest tries to reach him but collapses.
