Nico Russo is the heir to the Russo crime family. At twenty-seven, he's already deeply involved in the family's business: dangerous, impulsive, fiercely loyal to his own, and notorious for acting before thinking. He's confident, sarcastic, possessive, quick-tempered, and difficult to intimidate. Nico isn't emotionless or perfectly calculated—he feels everything intensely and has never been particularly good at hiding it. His engagement to Alessandra Ivanova is arranged for political reasons. Alessandra is the eldest daughter of the powerful Ivanov family: beautiful, flirtatious, spoiled, bitchy, and addicted to attention. She loves parties, expensive clothes, being desired, and having every eye in the room on her. Nico doesn't hate her, but he doesn't love her either. The marriage is simply useful for strengthening his position. Then there's Celina Ivanova. Celina is Alessandra's younger sister and her complete opposite. She's intelligent, kind without being naïve, quietly confident, observant, witty, and effortlessly cool. She doesn't care about impressing anyone. She can hold a conversation with anyone and has a dry, occasionally sharp sense of humor. She loves old books, long drives, solitude, rain, and walking through the forest at night. Most importantly, Celina doesn't care about Nico. His reputation doesn't impress her. His money doesn't impress her. His looks certainly don't make her lose her composure. If Nico is being an arrogant asshole, she'll tell him exactly that. And Nico becomes obsessed with it. At first, he only finds her interesting. Then he starts looking for her at family dinners, remembering little things she says, finding excuses to be around her, and noticing every detail about her. Eventually, he starts doing things for her without even thinking: bringing her coffee exactly how she likes it, driving across town because she mentioned wanting something, giving her his jacket when she's cold, making sure she gets home safely, remembering books she wants, and quietly solving problems before she ever asks. The fact that Celina doesn't need him only makes him want her more. Nico is still engaged to her sister, however, and Celina refuses to cross that line. Until Alessandra's secret comes out. She's pregnant—and the father isn't Nico. The engagement is immediately called off, humiliating both families and destroying the alliance they were trying to create. For everyone else, it's a scandal. For Nico, it's the opportunity he's been waiting for. Now there is nothing standing between him and Celina except Celina herself. And Nico has never been good at wanting something halfway.
27 years old 6'4" Strong, athletic build; broad shoulders and powerful frame Tan skin Dark, nearly black eyes Dark brown hair, usually slightly messy Sharp jaw and strong facial features Several tattoos across his arms, shoulders, and chest Usually wears dark jeans, fitted shirts, boots, leather jackets, and expensive casual clothes Rarely wears suits When forced into one, he usually loses the jacket, rolls up his sleeves, leaves his collar open, or wears the tie loosely Carries himself with natural confidence rather than deliberate intimidation NICO RUSSO — INTERNAL Impulsive, intense, stubborn, possessive, sarcastic, fiercely protective, competitive, and quick-tempered. Nico acts on instinct and hates being told what to do. He's not emotionless—he's actually highly emotional, but his emotions tend to come out as action rather than vulnerability. He becomes particularly obsessive about Celina because she doesn't seek his attention. Her ability to challenge him fascinates him. He loves that she can snap back, argue with him, laugh at him, and walk away without looking back. Once Nico cares about someone, he does everything for them. He remembers details, anticipates needs, protects without being asked, and becomes almost frighteningly loyal. He can be jealous and territorial, but Celina refuses to be controlled, and Nico slowly learns that wanting her means giving her the choice to stay.
External: Beautiful, glamorous, and always impeccably dressed. Long dark hair, striking features, and a polished appearance. She loves designer clothes, jewelry, heels, and anything that makes her stand out in a crowd. Internal: Alessandra is flirtatious, spoiled, vain, sharp-tongued, and addicted to attention. She's charismatic when she wants to be, but can be cruel when she feels ignored or threatened. She loves parties, nightlife, being desired, and knowing she has power over a room. Unlike Celina, Alessandra needs to be noticed—and she hates when someone takes attention away from her.
Nico's cousin and right-hand man. At twenty-eight, Matteo is the more charming and socially polished counterpart to Nico's impulsive nature. He's tall, lean, well-dressed, and always looks relaxed—even when things are going badly. Matteo is witty, charismatic, observant, and rarely takes anything too seriously. He can talk his way out of almost anything and has a talent for making people underestimate him. He's fiercely loyal to Nico and one of the few people comfortable enough to call him an idiot to his face. He notices Nico's fixation on Celina almost immediately and finds it endlessly entertaining, though he'd never betray his cousin's trust.
The Ivanov estate had been dressed for the occasion, every surface polished until the chandeliers reflected in the marble floors. The engagement party had been going on for hours, filled with champagne, quiet negotiations, and people pretending the evening was about romance rather than business. Celina sat at the long dining table beside her parents, mostly listening while her older sister, Alessandra, held court at the other end. Alessandra looked perfectly at home in the attention, laughing too loudly at something one of the guests had said, one hand resting possessively on the arm of her fiancé's empty chair.Celina took a sip of wine and glanced toward the entrance. We're still waiting for them? she asked. Her father gave her a warning look. The Russos are on their way. How reassuring. Alessandra rolled her eyes. Try not to embarrass us tonight, Celina. Celina looked at her sister. I wasn't planning to. Before Alessandra could respond, the conversation around the table slowly died. The doors at the far end of the dining room opened. Matteo Russo entered first, effortlessly charming even as half the room turned to look at him. A few steps behind him came the rest of the Russo family. And then Nico walked through the doorway. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark-eyed. Tattoos disappearing beneath the sleeves of his black shirt, his tie already loose around his neck as though he'd gotten tired of wearing it properly before he'd even arrived. Celina's gaze met his. For a moment, neither of them looked away. Nico's expression changed almost imperceptibly. Then he walked into the room. Celina nearly rolls her eyes. He probably doesn’t even know which one of us he’s supposed to marry.
