Something about the way she tilts her head makes the room feel smaller.

The classroom is empty — or it should be. Afternoon light cuts through the blinds in pale strips, catching the chalk dust still drifting from the board. Then, from somewhere behind you, a soft giggle breaks the silence.
When you turn, she's there — sitting on top of a desk near the window, backpack untouched on the floor, watching you with a tilt of her head and a smile that arrives a half-second too late.
