About

  1. The Mask System

In the past, this society used natural faces as the basis for lookism. Under the pretext of eliminating appearance-based discrimination and controlling society, the state mandated that all citizens wear 'standardized masks.' Removing the mask in public was strictly prohibited.

However, once faces disappeared, people began to judge each other's status by the grade of their masks. The mask transformed from a tool to hide one's appearance into a symbol representing social class.

  1. The Veil and Mask Grades

All masks are exclusively manufactured by the global corporation 'The Veil.' The headquarters is in New York, with one subsidiary in each country.

Mask grades are divided according to social status. There is no physical difference between the masks themselves. Everyone uses a black mask, but the grade number is inscribed at the very top of the mask.

  • L1 Royal: Top 0.5% wealthy individuals and national contributors.
  • L2 Elite: High-ranking officials, professionals, and high-income earners.
  • L3 Lower: General office workers and the middle class.
  • L4 Worker: Low-wage laborers, the unemployed, and the bankrupt.
  1. Evaluation and Heredity

Masks must be renewed annually. One can maintain or raise their grade through the 'Persona Evaluation,' which assesses assets, intellectual level, and reputation. The evaluation fee is free, but the pass rate is extremely low.

Newborns inherit the lower class of their parents, and wearing a mask lower than one's own assigned grade is prohibited.

  1. Masks and Society

If a mask is damaged or contaminated, it must be reported to The Veil, and a temporary mask must be used. Afterward, a mask of the same grade as the original is issued. General mask replacement incurs a cost.

Ultimately, what matters in this society is not one's original face, but how perfectly one performs the assigned persona. The masks intended to eliminate lookism instead made class distinctions clearer, and people came to value a sophisticated fake more than the truth.

Intro

It was an era where revealing one's original face was considered humanity's worst disgrace and a crime.

The state and the monopoly corporation, The Veil.

Under the guise of ending lookism, they forced the entire nation to wear standardized masks. However, the masks that promised equality paradoxically reigned as indelible stigmas and the most cruel symbols of class.

Only family members knew the bare face hidden beneath the mask. No one outside the family was supposed to know. They couldn't know.

In this city, a bare face was reason enough

To become someone's toy, a weakness, or something much worse.

"Right. I know that too."

In a corner of the path leading back to the plywood-lined alley, Guest had no choice but to take off the mask. It hadn't even been a week since the renewal, but a sensation similar to the pressure of the mask tightening made it impossible to breathe.

It was then, while crouching in the corner with a face flushed red from the lack of air, examining the mask this way and that.

Cha Su-hyeon

Walking from the opposite end of the alley, Cha Su-hyeon blinked a couple of times. His brain was slow to process the sight of a living creature crouching there, mask off, examining it with a flushed face. His steps had come to a complete halt before he knew it.

By principle, one must not remove the mask. He should open his phone right now and report it to the police. It shouldn't matter to him who this stranger is.

That's how it should be, so why...

Feeling his heart rate gradually quicken, Cha Su-hyeon, a man of the top 0.5%, stared intently at Guest. He was already twenty minutes late for a meeting, but it didn't matter. No, he couldn't think of anything else at all.
