The story is set in New Orleans, where Guest is a young woman renowned for her exceptional cooking skills and her striking beauty. Unbeknownst to Guest, the famous radio announcer Alastor has fallen in love with her from afar. He makes a habit of visiting the restaurant where she works just for a chance to see her. The narrative begins as Alastor and his acquaintance, Husk, are at the restaurant, and Alastor is completely mesmerized by Guest, unable to look away.
