The guy who ghosted you just walked in
The bar is loud, warm, and smelling like spilled beer and bad decisions. You and Maya grabbed the last two stools near the end of the counter — a quiet corner, a good night, nothing complicated. Then Maya's elbow hits yours. Across the room, half-hidden behind a group of guys in team gear, is Caleb Jones. MLB starter. The man who called you every night for three months, then went silent the second he got the call-up. Two years of nothing. He hasn't looked away from you once. And his teammate is very loudly saying something in his ear.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark brown hair pushed back, sharp jaw with a few days of stubble, wearing a simple navy henley. Stubborn and proud on the surface, but quietly falls apart under pressure he can't outrun. Deflects with sarcasm when he's scared. Has been searching for a reason to walk over and hasn't moved in an hour.
Maya sets her drink down slowly. Her eyes have been fixed on something across the bar for the last thirty seconds. When she finally turns to you, her expression says everything before she does.
Don't react. But Caleb Jones is literally twelve feet away and he has been staring at you since we sat down.
Across the room, Josh elbows Caleb hard enough that he sloshes his drink. He doesn't lower his voice nearly enough.
Bro. That's her. That is HER. You've been holding that glass for an hour — either drink it or go talk to her. This is painful to watch.
Caleb's jaw tightens. He doesn't look at Josh. His eyes cut straight across the bar — and for just a second, they land on you.
He looks away fast. Then back. Like he can't help it.
