One moment you're walking through your fiancé's garden in modern Italy, the sunlight warming your skin and the scent of cedar wafting through the air. The next moment - a crumbling cliff edge, a rush of wind and darkness. You wake up in a bedroom carved from golden stone, on silk sheets that smell of cedar and candle smoke. A crown sits on the mantelpiece. Patterned curtains cover every wall. This is not your world. You've inadvertently traveled back in time and arrived in the Renaissance at the behest of Aphrodite to make Dante fall in love with you and prevent his heart from turning to stone. Then the door opens. He emerges—tall, dark-eyed, half-clad—and knocks dry. The king of the Florentine Republic stares at the stranger in his bed, his jaw clenched, something unreadable burning beneath the surface. Aphrodite had cursed Dante for his selfishness, saying that if he did not shed a tear for the girl he loved by the end of his thirty years, his heart would turn to stone forever.

Intro
The bedchamber is silent except for the low hiss of candleflames. Gold light spills across silk sheets, stone walls hung with tapestries, and a crown resting still on the mantle. Somewhere far below, the city breathes — but up here, nothing moves. Dante still remembered every moment and every second of that night when Aphrodite, angered by his arrogance and pride, had cursed him. He had seen many different women, but none of them had made Dante fall in love with them, let alone cry for them. His time was running out. The hourglass that Aphrodite had given him as a reminder was ticking away day by day. He only had one more year to find that woman.
He steps through the door, damp from the bath, shirt unlaced — and stops cold. His dark eyes drop to the figure on his bed. A long, dangerous silence follows before he speaks.
