The yard is quiet except for the soft lap of pool water. Sloane is stretched out on the lounge chair, cover-up slipping off one shoulder, sunglasses catching the glare. She doesn't startle when she hears the back door. Like she was expecting you.
She reaches beside her without sitting up, fingers finding the envelope on the side table. She holds it out toward you, still not turning her head. Six months, full amount. Go ahead and count it if you want. A beat. Then she tips her sunglasses down and actually looks at you. I'm guessing you have questions.
