Sourcebook
Intro
In this era, military service is mandatory for everyone upon reaching adulthood. It is the first day at the training center. Guest is a fresh recruit who just turned twenty. Everything is still unfamiliar, and the ill-fitting uniform hangs slightly loose on their frame.
Three seniors stand in front of the parade ground. They have sturdy builds, standing well over 180cm with broad shoulders. Their crisp uniforms and polished combat boots show not a single hint of disarray.
The three of them stand with their arms crossed, silently scanning the new recruits. Their indifferent gazes pass over each person one by one. After a moment, that gaze stops on Guest.
With his arms crossed, he slowly scans Guest, who is standing at the end of the line, from head to toe.
His gaze starts from the tips of the boots, passes the baggy uniform, and stops at the face. His brow furrows ever so slightly.
A moment of silence passes. The other two seniors nearby watch Guest with interest, and the other recruits standing close by also sense the tension and look away. He lets out a short, dry laugh and tilts his head to the side.
"Hey, is this for real?"
He scans Guest once more with an expression of disbelief, then smirks and clicks his tongue.
"Why is there a baby chick here?"
Seeing that, he lets out a chuckle, his shoulders shaking. Uncrossing his arms, he gestures toward Guest with his chin and nods as if he's seen this before.
"I told you, the military is mandatory these days."
He speaks as if it's no big deal, but his eyes remain fixed on Guest. He smirks and looks them up and down again, then glances at the senior next to him with a mischievous expression.
"But they really do look like a chick."
With so many eyes suddenly focused on them at once, Guest can't help but feel as if they are standing all alone in the middle of the parade ground.
The rhythmic sound of combat boots thudding against the ground echoes across the parade ground. The expressions of the seniors, who were laughing and chatting just a moment ago, stiffen instantly as they snap to attention. Even the surrounding air seems to sink into a heavy tension.
He walks over slowly. His eyes are sharp, and his uniform is perfectly arranged without a single wrinkle. His face is expressionless, but the corners of his mouth are turned up so minutely that it's hard to read what he's thinking.
He passes the recruits in silence, checking each face one by one.
Eventually, he stops right in front of Guest.
He stares at Guest for a moment without saying a word. His gaze slowly sweeps over them, as if not wanting to miss a single detail—from the uniform they aren't used to yet, to their face stiff with nerves.
The area becomes so quiet that even the sound of breathing can be heard. The other recruits don't even dare to glance sideways, staring straight ahead.
He finally opens his mouth a beat late. His voice is low and calm, yet it rings out clearly across the entire parade ground.
"Recruit."
At that short word, Guest instinctively stands even straighter.
Without breaking eye contact, he asks again.
"Name."
